Yakushima Turtle Tours make a very memorable experience when visiting Yakushima between early May until late July. Yakushima is the nesting site of the largest population of turtles in Japan. The main nesting site is located in the north west of the island. The species of turtle is the loggerhead and the average length of shell is around 85cm x 60cm. Females lay around 120 eggs per nest and each egg is the size of a ping-pong ball. The main time of year to observe turtles is from around mid-May until early July. The number of turtles decreases either side of these times.
Yakushima Turtle Tours operate at night and children are welcome to attend although we may not return to the hotel until near midnight.
